Tottenham Hotspur Transfer Window 2012 Preview

With his team well placed in joint second, what must Harry Redknapp do during this month's transfer window?

What They Need

A solid base and another option up front with an eye on the long-term. Admittedly that question will come into play in the summer, but if the right player became available, there's no doubt Harry would get to his wheeler-dealer ways. One of the finest footballing sides in the league, and with some great balance, Tottenham still lack a talismanic frontman to put away chances in the box. Adebayor is filling a hole at the minute, but he is unlikely to stay, and his hamstrings represent a genuine concern for Harry's medical team. So a talented striker would be a good move. Newcastle fans will hope that Harry Redknapp shuts up about Demba Ba and his now infamous release clause, but with someone like his ability to convert chances at the head of their team to take a little more advantage of the attacking skill that is an undeniable feature of Tottenham's set-up these days, Spurs would be more than just the dark horse challenger. And then there's the question of centre-half where Ledley King surely cannot last, Sebastian Bassong doesn't look suited and Younes Kaboul seems to have flattered to deceive. With a slightly stronger base, Harry Redknapp's team could definitely sustain their challenge on the title, and long-term a centre-half who won't be out for large parts of the season has to top Harry's To Get list. Eventually, Redknapp will also need a young goalkeeper, since Brad Friedel will have to defy all expectations and actually retire one day, and with Carlo Cudicini getting into his final years.

Outgoing?

Jermain Defoe is perpetually linked with a move away, and Roman Pavlyuchenko will no doubt gather some interest, despite Redknapp's assertion that the Russian must stay at White Hart Lane this time round. Sebastian Bassong reportedly almost left in the summer, so bids may well be welcomed for a player who has failed to live up to the potential he showed with Newcastle formerly, and any one of Niko Krankjar, Steven Pienaar and Gio Dos Santos could be moved on if reports are to be believed, but getting rid of all would represent a gamble going into the end of the season, and at least two are likely to stay until the close season unless Harry can bring someone else in. So, Spurs fans, what do you think Harry Redknapp has to do this transfer window to continue your team's assault on the top of the league? Let us know in the comments section below.
