Ukraine 0-0 England - 5 Reasons Three Lions Aren't The Superpower Some Think They Are

2. A Distinct Lack Of Wing Options, Both In Midfield And Defence

The 0-0 draw in Ukraine proved something to me, England have literally no back-up on the wings. With Theo Walcott being stifled by Shevchuk, Danny Welbeck out through suspension and the only wingers on the bench being the under-performing Ashley Young and the lightweight Raheem Sterling, England were stuck. There were no outlets on the wings and if 28th ranked Ukraine can prevent the English full-backs from affecting the game, imagine what the 26 other teams in the top 28 could do to us. Leighton Baines needs games, right now he is the best current English left-back and if he were right-footed would be starting week-in, week-out. It's the right hand side that causes the problems. Glen Johnson and Kyle Walker are not good enough for the international game, the former is slower and clumsier whilst the latter is naive and easily exploited. For me, this was the most frustrating thing about the bore draw in the Ukraine.
