Ukraine 0-0 England - 5 Reasons Three Lions Aren't The Superpower Some Think They Are

3. The Struggle To Form A Solid Midfield

Frank Lampard, Steven Gerrard, Jack Wilshere, Michael Carrick. All relatively good midfielders in their own rights and very solid midfielders for their respective club teams. So why can't they perform together for England? Centurion's Lampard and Gerrard have spent an amazing total of 27 years worth of time playing for England, and both have had spells as Captain of the national side, but for some reason, they can't work together. 27 years and neither have anything to show for it, an abysmal state of affairs for the duo. Jack Wilshere; the future of English football. The general consensus among England fans is that if we can keep that lad fit, we may just have something to look forward to, but who could partner him? Lampard and Gerrard are surely edging towards the end of their tenure and it's time for a new breed of Lion to come through. Michael Carrick is an interesting option for that free spot. For the last two years, Carrick has almost single-handedly marshalled the midfield of Manchester United, and his vision and composure on the ball has been a godsend for Ferguson's final champions. The only proof you need is his reverse ball for Javier Hernandez against Chelsea - granted it is a sublime finish, but the ball over the top is exquisite.
