West Ham 1-3 Newcastle: 5 Things We Learnt

2. Mike Williamson Deserves An England Call-Up

This sounds like a bold statement, but anyone who has been watching Williamson this season will know how well he has performed. The centre-back has been one of Newcastle's players of the season, throwing himself into any tackle and blocking countless shots on goal. The absence of Fabricio Coloccini was seen as a big worry for Pardew's side, who in recent seasons have been reliant upon the imperious Argentine. However, Williamson has filled the boots of the 31-year-old and become a fans' favourite. Despite his own-goal against West Ham, Williamson was once again one of the stand-out performers for Newcastle. He epitomises the work ethic of the team and fights for every header and tackle. Given his fine performances, the centre-back deserves a call-up to the England side. At a time when we are not blessed with many central defenders, the inclusion of Williamson would be entirely justified by Roy Hodgson. With the World Cup looming, it is important that players who are in-form are given an opportunity to demonstrate their ability on the international stage. Jay Rodruiguez and Adam Lallana were the latest to be given a chance by Hodgson, so why not experiment with Williamson? After the game, Pardew was quick to praise Williamson for another impressive performance. If Hodgson is keeping tabs on the centre-back, then Saturday's showing will have only reinforced the belief that he is worthy of a call-up.
