6. Steve McClaren

Why He Should: People forget just how good Steve McClaren was in his time at Middlesbrough. He guided them to consistent mid-table finishes, won the League Cup in 2004 and led them to the UEFA Cup final in 2006, granting the North East clubs one of their most successful spells. Additionally, his managerial comeback with FC Twente led to the Dutch club lifting their first ever Eredivisie title. showing that McClaren can defy the odds to win silverware.

He's also learnt from some of the very best. He'll have picked up a lot during the time he spent as assistant manager to Sir Alex Ferguson at Manchester United, and while working with Sven-Göran Eriksson in the England setup. This knowledge would set him in good stead at West Ham.

Why He Shouldn't: McClaren's reputation was in tatters after he failed to secure qualification for Euro 2008 as England Manager, and it's something he's never really managed to get past. His return to Premier League management would invite a lot of scrutiny and pressure, which the West Ham owners may wish to avoid.

Furthermore, his managerial renaissance has hit a few bumps recently. His second spell at Twente wasn't as successful, and he was sacked by Derby County on the 25th of May having failed to make the playoffs. Do West Ham really want someone recently fired by a Championship team?
