Where Are They Now: Jürgen Klopp's First Liverpool XI
1. Simon Mignolet
Before Simon Mignolet moved to Liverpool from Sunderland for £9 million in 2013, Pepe Reina had arguably been the Reds' best goalkeeper in recent memory. However, with his standards declining, the Belgian was brought in to offer some competition for the Spaniard.
Eventually, Mignolet earned the starting role at Anfield, but despite being a strong shot-stopper, he was never truly able to establish himself as a great goalkeeper. There were too many mistakes in his game for any Liverpool fan to ever feel confident of a clean sheet.
Though he was retrospectively much better for Liverpool than his ultimate replacement, Loris Karius, his time with Liverpool is not looked back on fondly by anyone. Mignolet was then dropped even further down the pecking order by the signing of Alisson Becker in 2018.
With the Belgian relegated to riding the bench, with the exception of just two cup games, Mignolet moved to Club Brugge in his home country, where last season he made 43 appearances in all competitions, including 27 in the league, helping the club become Champions of the Belgian First Division A. It appears as though he will be the first choice keeper coming into the 2020-21 season as well if their opening game is anything to go by.
