World Cup 2014: 5 England Players Set To Miss Out On Brazil
4. Jermain Defoe 54 caps, 19 goals
England's nearly man. It is quite surprising that Defoe has racked up over a half-century of England appearances given he has never really been first choice. He has, however, been a part of many, many England squads, somehow getting the tag of a super sub option despite often coming off the bench and having little to no effect on the game. The Tottenham forward is, however, a goalscorer and 219 career goals is an impressive record for the striker who turned 31 in October. The problem is he is not first choice for a Spurs side struggling to score goals, and scoring in the cup competitions will simply not cut it. Daniel Sturridge has started the season on fire and secured the starting spot upfront, and Defoe cannot play in any of the deeper or wider positions. Defoe is competing with Rickie Lambert for that reserve striker role, but the Saints attacker offers a physical, direct option, while Defoe is too similar in style to players like Danny Welbeck and Theo Walcott, all of whom look to use their pace behind the defence. Ultimately, his lack of league games allied to his lack of adaptability to different positions/styles means Defoe might miss out on another World Cup.
