10 Doctor Who Characters Who Should Have Been Companions
1. Lady Christina De Souza
Planet of the Dead is a very underrated Doctor Who story. This 2009 episode featured a killer concept as well as an all-star cast. Heading the top of the cast is Michelle Ryan as Lady Christina De Souza, a jewel thief who ends up stranded on a hostile alien planet with The Doctor and a double decker bus.
Christina was placed as The Doctor's equal in this episode, demonstrating leadership and survival skills from the outset. This automatically put her in the spotlight as we hadn't really seen many characters be brought into the show as already formidable challengers. Rose, Martha, and Donna all had seasons of development, so it was nice to see this switch up.
Ryan had a lot of chemistry with David Tennant as well. Their relationship was believable, and didn't feel forced like a lot of Doctor/companion relationships can. So, when The Doctor turned down Christina's proposition at the end of the episode, it actually carried more impact than some of the classic season’s departures.
Christina was criminally underused in Doctor Who and it is such a shame we never got to see her have a full season with the Tenth Doctor.
