Netflix's military dramedy series Boots was released to critical acclaim and strong viewership this past October, where its less-than-favourable depiction of the Marine Corps' treatment of gay people caused it to be denounced by the Trump administration, while the Pentagon predictably called it "woke garbage."
Considering the show's strong ratings - likely in part due to its "controversial" nature - it was something of a surprise to see it suddenly cancelled back in December, with the streamer providing no additional context for its axing.
Deadline reported that the cancellation was a complex one for Netflix, yet considering the show's popularity and firm place in pop culture, many criticised it as a possibly political decision above all else.
While Boots absolutely functions brilliantly as a one-off limited series, it's a damn shame that the opportunity for more was shut down so emphatically, especially as this was the last project to feature involvement from famed producer Norman Lear.
