Doctor Who: All Doctors Ranked From Worst To Best

5. The Twelfth Doctor - Peter Capaldi

Best Episode: Kill The Moon - The first instant classic of series eight. Gothic horror returns to Doctor Who! Worst Episode: The Forest Of The Night - A wonderful fairy tale but it makes no sense whatsoever! Over the course of series eight, audiences were introduced to a very different Doctor to his immediate predecessors. Cold, arrogant and more alien, Peter Capaldi's Doctor harked back to the classic Doctor's of old. There was very much a Jon Pertwee vibe to this Doctor and even a little bit of Sylvester McCoy's ability to manipulate; to audiences that had only watched Nu-Who, this was quite a shock but for fans of Classic Who too, this was a Doctor that was very much a sum of all his preceeding parts. There was no question that Capaldi was excellent from the start; but it wasn't his performance but his character that took a long time to adjust too. Series eight was about the Doctor dealing with the trauma of The Name/Day/Time Of The Doctor trilogy and finding himself again. But by the end of series eight he had named himself protector of Earth, claiming it as his home and reconnecting with Clara in a way that he hadn't thought possible. He is still a ruthless character and he doesn't like hugs but over the course of those twelve episodes he has emerged as a truly great Doctor in every sense. Is he likely to be listed as a favourite Doctor? Quite possibly, but as we have only seen him emerge as the proper Doctor we all know and love at the end of series eight, it will be series nine when we truly see him become one of the greats.
