Doctor Who: 10 Most Disturbing Episodes

9. Blink

Doctor Who The Curse Of Fenric
BBC Studios

Everyone knows and loves this episode, thanks to its scary set-up and disturbing use of the uncanny valley. Steven Moffat's classic episode "Blink" reinvented the levels of horror that the Doctor could experience and was filled to the brim with disturbing imagery.

This episode saw a young protagonist - played by Carey Mulligan - called Sally Sparrow, interpreting clues left by The Doctor who's trapped in 1969. While figuring out his messages to free the TARDIS, she is haunted by The Weeping Angels. These are creatures that look just like statues, but if you blink or look away from them, they attack with unfathomable speed.

What made this episode so disturbing is that the Angels are so close to being human but aren't. Statues themselves give people a queasy feeling because they reflect human characteristics but have no semblance of life. Many viewers felt their own irrational fears become a reality in this episode and couldn't even look at a cathedral afterwards without getting nervous.

The show itself knew the damage it did, as the ending even showed a tonne of public statues, making you question your safety whenever you next saw a gargoyle. It doesn't get more disturbing than that.
