Doctor Who: 10 Stories You Must Rewatch After The Power Of The Doctor

The story which contributed a substantial amount to The Power of the Doctor is the Series 12 finale The Timeless Children, which sees the Master explaining to the Doctor her hidden past.

In one of the most talked about episodes of Doctor Who, the Doctor finds out that she was found by a space traveller, Tecteun, and was then experimented on to learn the secret of her regenerations. Tecteun then implanted the regenerations into the native Gallifrey race the Shobogans, creating the first-ever Time Lords.

While this is happening, the Master manages to steal the Cyberium from the Lone Cyberman and creates a race of regenerating Cybermen to take over the universe.

This episode was hugely controversial upon broadcast as it rewrote the history of the show, and made canon that there are previous incarnations of the Doctor before William Hartnell. For many fans, this destroyed the mystery and intrigue of the Doctor. Even former script editor Andrew Cartmel criticised the story for ruining the mystery of the Doctor.

Despite this, The Timeless Children is an essential watch, as it gives Dhawan's Master and Jodie's Doctor some of their best scenes together, and almost acts as a prequel to The Power of the Doctor.
