Doctor Who Review: Listen - 10 Ways The New Doctor Is Revealed
5. Why The Doctor Went Back To The Barn
The barn is the Doctors safe place. It is where he went as a child to get away from his fears and those who would torment him for having them. It is also where Clara teaches him to accept and honor that part of himself. The barn represents a turning point. It is important to the Doctor because it is the place where he decides what kind of person he is. Where else would the Doctor go when he is facing what frightens him most? The barn is home. Abandonment, the loss of ones family, ones home, is perhaps the greatest fear a child can have. This is what the War Doctor is facing and though he hides it well he is terrified. Claras copies saved the Doctor at every point in his timeline. That moment in the barn with a sobbing and frightened child is when the original Clara saves the Doctor overall. Without those kind words, that willingness to impart not pity but wisdom, the boy may have turned into a man who allowed his fears to dictate his actions and that seldom ends well.
