The futuristic alien city glimpsed in the series trailer is the setting for Episode 2, Frank Cottrell Boyce’s second Doctor Who episode (which will hopefully be an improvement on his first, the nicely-titled but ridiculous In the Forest of the Night). Reminding us of Rose’s trip to The End of the World and Amy’s to Starship UK, it looks like the Doctor again wants to impress his new companion with a flashy trip into the future. What a show-off.

Despite the gleaming sci-fi landscape, the main building used in this episode is no CGI creation – the Doctor Who team filmed in the City of Arts and Sciences in Valencia, Spain, an unusually designed complex which also appeared in Disney blockbuster Tomorrowland. It looks like it’s genuinely from an alien world and will no doubt impress on screen.

In this futuristic setting, the Doctor and Bill will encounter emoji-faced robots – ah, that old Who trope of characters that look innocent and friendly, but will soon turn bad and make something seemingly ordinary forever creep you out.
