The Boys: Every Episode Ranked Worst To Best
9. We Gotta Go Now (Season 2, Episode 5)
The Boys has never strayed from its whip-smart social satire. Season two's We Gotta Go Now features real-life celebrity callouts, an intense criticism of the Hollywood machine and timely assessments of how the media and big companies try to increase representation for their audiences.
Outside of all these excellently handled themes, the episode also has a top-tier narrative, following Butcher as he grapples with his self-deprecation and his recent inability to save Becca. Along the way, he, Hughie and MM are attacked by Black Noir, and Butcher realises that he needs Hughie in his life more than he first thought.
We Gotta Go Now is equal parts riveting tension and seamless character building, as Butcher shows his human side and Homelander grows increasingly detached from a world he no longer seems to recognise, in one scene imagining himself massacring some protesters. At this point, season two's final stretch was shaping up to be something really special, and on top of that we finally get some more time with Stan Edgar being sinister as all hell.
