1. The Benoit Tragedy
You probably saw this number one entry coming, but what else could it have possibly been?
Chris Benoit no-showed the Vengeance: Night of Champions pay-per-view on June 24th 2007. The following day, his body was discovered at his home in Fayetteville, Georgia, alongside those of his wife Nancy and their son Daniel.
That same night, WWE aired a tribute show to their fallen contractor. Then came the sickening news that Benoit had murdered Nancy and Daniel before taking his own life.
Much has been written about why Benoit did what he did. CTE caused by years of head trauma, untreated, profound grief, and a predisposition to sadism and abuse remain the primary factors, but the fact of the matter is that three people - one of whom was just seven years old - had died.
The days surrounding the Benoit tragedy remain among the bleakest the wrestling industry has ever seen. One overlooked aspect of this torrid affair is that Nancy and Daniel's names have also been wiped from history. They deserve to be remembered for who they were; not swept under the rug alongside the evil monster who defined their finally days.
