11 Most Disappointing WWE PPV Endings
5. — ECW Dies (Again...)
Heading into December to Dismember, Big Show had been set to defend his ECW Title against Rob Van Dam, CM Punk, Sabu, Test and Bobby Lashley, but a series of events—both before the match and during it—saw things slowly but surely follow a rather unpopular script.
First, Sabu was written out of action in a backstage injury angle, with Hardcore Holly being named his replacement. Or in other words, an ECW original was being replaced with a WWE guy on an ECW-branded show. No prizes for guessing how that decision was received…
But hay, at least Rob Van Dam was still in contention, as well as rising fan favourite CM Punk. Until, of course, Punk became the first man eliminated and Van Dam followed him less than two minutes later. That allowed Lashley—Vince McMahon’s choice to win—to pin Test and Big Show and become the new champion, much to the chagrin of most ECW fans.
Both the show and the match’s finish proved that this ECW reboot was basically just a cheap, pro-WWE knock-off. Somehow, the brand limped on for over three more years before being put to bed in 2010.
