To think, things could've been different had nobody spoken up against Vince McMahon's ludicrous decree that "brothers don't fight". The boss couldn't wrap his head around thoughts of Bret and Owen Hart coming to blows. Bruce Prichard was one of several who went to bat for the storyline, but they agreed with Bret that it should be Owen rather than Bruce Hart (who had actually pitched it) on TV.

The siblings had a tiff during Survivor Series 1993, then Bret and Owen patched things up enough to challenge for the tag belts at the '94 Royal Rumble. Trying to lead by example and protect his younger brother, Bret feuded to tag Owen in despite suffering a knee injury, and that cost the Harts big time. Post-match, Owen kicked Bret's injured leg and called him "too damn selfish".

Owen won out vs. Bret at WrestleMania X, then won King Of The Ring before working another scorcher with his bro inside a steel cage at SummerSlam. Later, baby Owen also cost the 'Hitman' his WWF Title vs. Bob Backlund. The siblings wouldn't get back on the same page until 1997 and the rekindled Hart Foundation.

They were natural enemies for years. Fans watching back home would easily relate to what was going on, because many of them had brothers or sisters they didn't particularly get along with. For older kids, Bret's frustration over having to fight his own flesh and blood made sense. To the younger ones, Owen's annoyance at 'living in the shadow' of an older brother stood out.

It was sheer gold.
