10 Athletes Who Betrayed Fans By Joining Their Team's Rival
7. Chris Chelios
Two of the "Original Six" NHL teams, the Chicago Blackhawks and Detroit Red Wings have gone head-to-head more than 800 times in both the regular season and playoffs. Even though they find themselves in different conferences now, the rivalry between the two franchises is the most anticipated among American NHL teams.
The Blackhawks and Red Wings have had some heated battles and common players that suited up for both teams, but none were as surprising as defenseman Chris Chelios. Though Chelios played for the Montreal Canadians from 1984 to 1990, most remember his best days as being with the Blackhawks.
Chelios was in Chicago from 1990 to 1999, but was then traded to the Red Wings for two first round draft selections and Anders Eriksson. At one point, Chelios had said that he hated the Red Wings, and would never play with the team during his career. When Chelios was on the trade block, one of the teams that came up with an offer was the Red Wings.
Chelios decided to waive his no-trade clause to head to Detroit, where he went on to win a Stanley Cup. Chelios has completely embraced Detroit since making the move, and has even opened up several restaurants in the area, closing down the one he owned in Chicago. For those curious, the chain of restaurants is called Cheli's Chili Bar.
