On a number of occasions, Raymond van Barneveld's desire and ability to continue to compete against the sport's elite has been called into question but each time any doubts emerge about his mentality, he always seems to produce the goods.

The Dutchman is a five-time world champion but it could be argued that his success at the Grand Slam of Darts in 2012 and his Premier League triumph in 2014 were more impressive.

The 48-year-old remains without a televised ranking triumph since 2007 and it is the main reason why he has had to sometimes fight for qualification to major competitions, but his displays at the World Championships over the last four years has kept him in contention at the top.

'Barney' has three semi-final appearances to his name and famously beat Michael van Gerwen at the last-16 stage in December in one of the greatest matches ever played. It not only elevated his status to another level but told his rivals that he wasn't finished.

He looks unlikely to capture a second Premier League crown this year but he has registered five 100+ averages in nine matches and the signs are good that he could break his major tournament duck later in 2016.
