10 Best Newcastle United Debuts Ever

7. Les Ferdinand

V Coventry City (19th August 1995) After proving to be one of QPR's most talented players (along with Trevor Sinclair), Kevin Keegan brought Sir Les to St James Park as part of a busy summer that also saw the arrivals of David Ginola, Warren Barton and Shaka Hislop. He was an immediate success and went on to form two stunningly successful partnerships upfront, first with Peter Beardsley and then with Alan Shearer. His debut was a fairly easy affair: both Rob Lee and Beardsley had scored already before Lee played a delightful ball through to Ferdinand in the 83rd minute who rounded the keeper and finished expertly. It was a signed of exciting things to come. Did It Last? Ferdinand is one of the biggest ones that got away too quickly in Newcastle history. That season he scored an incredible 29 goals, and the next he took himself to the 50 mark (41 in the league) in just 81 games, picking up two league runners-up medals in the process. He was and is a legend, and the idea that he was sold after only two seasons is still a kick in the gut.
