Premier League relegation dogfights have become as much a staple of English football as the FA Cup final, following the various ramifications of each goal making for exceptional telly. This was the first of it's kind however as Oldham needed to win and hope that Crystal Palace lost at Arsenal. It seemed like Oldham would comfortably secure their place in the top division, scoring two in each half to Southampton's solitary one. At 4-1 the game was far from over, some Matt Le Tissier magic looking like it was going to deny Oldham their survival as the Saints legend completed his hat trick to make it 4-3 with five minutes left. Oldham managed to keep Le Tissier at bay for a few minutes more and Arsenal duly dispatched Crystal Palace, meaning Joe Royle's Oldham would retain their Premier League status for one more year. It was just one more year however, they've never made a triumphant return.
