1. Luis Figo - Barcelona To Real Madrid (£37 million)
Perhaps the most controversial transfer of all time, Luis Figo's record breaking move to Real Madrid from their fiercest rivals Barcelona shook world football. Having signed for the Catalan giants in 1995 from Sporting Lisbon, Figo had spent 5 years at Barcelona, and had become an integral part of the team as well as becoming a fans favourite. However, the fan's opinion of Figo polarised in the summer of 2000, when Real Madrid; themselves embarking on their galactico era - whereby President Florentino Perez promised to sign at least one world class player every year -
activated Figo's release clause of 60 million euros. The Barcelona faithful labelled him a traitor, and to this day view his transfer as one of the darkest days in the club's history. Their hatred of their former hero was inevitably showcased when Figo and his new Real Madrid team mates visited the Camp Nou in subsequent seasons. In one particular incident, this hatred culminated in, amongst a plethora of objects thrown, a pig's head being launched onto the pitch towards Figo as he went to take a corner in a league game in 2002. However, depsite the controversy that this transfer caused, Figo went on to win two La Liga titles, as well as the 2002 Uefa Champions League with Madrid. Figo's legacy at Madrid remains, as, like Zidane, the Portuguese star was recently named in the club's 'Best ever Foreign Eleven' by Marca.
