The aforementioned quest for strikers, which Spurs have been on for years, has seen them linked to a wide variety of players, but very few came more out of the blue than Troy Deeney. Watford's former jailbird striker was 25 at the time and the Championship was (and still is) the highest level he had ever played at, having previously only played for Walsall and Halesowen Town. Deeney may well have scored 19 and 24 league goals respectively in the last two seasons but, again, this was merely in the Championship and his record of 64 goals in 188 appearances for the Hornets in all competitions isn't the kind of record that would make anyone think he could lead the line at a big club like Spurs - he certainly wouldn't have been any better than what they already have and would never have fired them in to the Champions League.
