In 2013, when Spurs' London rivals West Ham United had released Carlton Cole, the White Hart Lane club were actually linked with making a move for the striker and snapping him up on a free transfer. it was such a bizarre link; why would a player deemed surplus to requirements at a smaller club with less quality like West Ham be considered good enough for a club vying for European places like Spurs? Moreover, Cole has never been a truly prolific goalscorer so, even in his prime, he would hardly have been the solution to the problems Spurs were having. He has also previously played for Chelsea and Charlton Athletic, so the likelihood of him moving to a fourth London club - or being made to feel welcome by the Spurs faithful if he did - were extremely slim. He ended up re-signing for West Ham and is still there now, but he hardly gets a sniff with players like Enner Valencia and Diafra Sakho currently at the club.
