“I cheered for Arsenal when I was a kid - I love their style of play. It’s flowing and open with a lot of first touch passes. It would be suitable for a player like me. If I get a chance to play for a high level club like Arsenal I wouldn’t hesitate to accept it.” - Jackson Martinez, January 2014.

Jackson Martinez never did receive an offer from the club of his dreams, with Arsenal plumping for the cheaper Danny Welbeck instead of the prolific Columbian. Martinez has since gone to China, where he has immediately regretted his decision to chase the dollar bills and has cited his desire to return to Europe.

Having set his agent the task of securing a move to Juventus, his heart - along with millions of other Gunners - would have sank when news broke of Gonzalo Higuain’s £75 million transfer to the Stadio delle Alpi.

Martinez is a goalscorer however, and that is what Arsenal are lacking. He would provide real firepower and if he can be acquired for a fee under £30 million, the club should be doing everything possible to free him from his Asian misery.

Or the club could have just acted sooner and signed him from either Porto or Athletico Madrid. Either way.
