Lewis Holtby didn’t have the best of times in English football, the three-cap wonder spending just a couple of years in London before heading back to Germany. However, when on form, the former Schalke midfielder was a brilliant midfielder. There was a reason he scored 14 goals in 24 appearances for the German U-21s from the middle of park.

Holtby was eligible to play for England, with his father a former British soldier who had supported Everton since the age of five.

“He immediately infected me with the Everton virus! Since then I have been an Everton fan and have always followed their games.” - Lewis Holtby, January 2013.

Everton have been accredited with a long-standing interest in the German midfielder, but never took the plunge, allowing Spurs to steal a march on them in 2013. Despite a strong start, he was never able to impose himself at White Hart Lane and was farmed out on loan to struggling Fulham.

He is however, a decent midfielder and Everton could have done with a player like him to complement or rival the likes of Leon Osman in years gone by.
