The euphoria which has enveloped Tyneside since Georginio Wijnaldum was announced as the Magpies' first summer signing last week has been quite extraordinary - and that feel-good factor alone could be enough to convince McClaren to name the Dutch international as his new skipper. An exciting attacking-midfielder he may be - and a player who has represented significant leadership qualities in the past - but Wijnaldum would be a left-field choice as Newcastle captain, mainly because it is rare for a new player to be immediately elevated to such a position. Yet the Dutch Player of the Year did follow now-teammate Siem de Jong's lead and captained his PSV Eindhoven side to the Eredivisie title last season, so he certainly has the credentials - but his lack of knowledge of English football and the Premier League could work against him.
