10 Candidates To Be Steve McClaren's Newcastle Captain

2. Georginio Wijnaldum

The euphoria which has enveloped Tyneside since Georginio Wijnaldum was announced as the Magpies' first summer signing last week has been quite extraordinary - and that feel-good factor alone could be enough to convince McClaren to name the Dutch international as his new skipper. An exciting attacking-midfielder he may be - and a player who has represented significant leadership qualities in the past - but Wijnaldum would be a left-field choice as Newcastle captain, mainly because it is rare for a new player to be immediately elevated to such a position. Yet the Dutch Player of the Year did follow now-teammate Siem de Jong's lead and captained his PSV Eindhoven side to the Eredivisie title last season, so he certainly has the credentials - but his lack of knowledge of English football and the Premier League could work against him. Wijnaldum will certainly form part of the Magpies' leadership team, but he is unlikely to be the club's official skipper. Likelihood Of Being Captain For 2015-16 Season: 3/10
