Should Aleksandar Mitrovic, Charlie Austin or any other forwards be brought to Tyneside this summer, then the likelihood of them being made captain is slim to nothing. But that is not the only position that Newcastle are looking to strengthen - with new centre-backs high on the priority list. At Derby County, Richard Keogh was McClaren's on-field general - and he very much enjoys having a centre-back as skipper. Should that be the case, then Cameroon captain Nicolas N'Koulou would be a great choice should he be recruited from Marseille this summer. Ajax centre-back Joel Veltman is another player who is interesting the Magpies and, although he has no previous leadership experience, his positioning on the field could see him elevated to the captaincy. The likelihood, however, is that McClaren will not opt for one of his new boys - but instead he will appoint from within.
