10 Coolest Clubs In World Football
2. Real Oviedo
The story of Real Oviedo is probably the most cockle warming on this list. From having their stadium used as an ammunition dump by Franco during the Civil War, to going through financial troubles that possibly only Portsmouth fans will be able to understand to being owned by one of the world’s wealthiest men; Oviedo’s timeline straight out of a Boy’s Own book.
Oviedo’s recent financial struggles were so severe that they called on fans and former players to purchases shares to keep the club going. Players like Juan Mata, Santi Cazorla and Michu all stepped up and bought shares; as did everyone else. The response was incredible, it was like that scene in Rudy where all the players put down their jerseys.
Real Oviedo now has more shareholders than any other club in Spain from random foreigners pitching in for the cause, to former World Cup winners buying them anonymously to Carlos Slim, the second richest man on this pale blue dot, who bought controlling stakes in the club in 2012.
If you don’t love this club, then football might not be for you.
