At first, the idea of Alan Shearer pairing up with Les Ferdinand didn't convince many. And even though the forwards didn't click when they played together for England in the international set-up, the pair went great guns with Newcastle United.

Ferdinand squashed all claims of an 'unsuitable pairing' by turning out to be a great foil for Shearer. Together, they tore defences asunder and accrued 41 goals in the 1995/96 season as the Toons secured third position in the table.

Shearer, for the third and final time, finished as the league's top scorer with 25 goals and also won the Player of the Year prize for the second time.

For all the excitement and growing expectations from this pair, Shearer struggled with injuries the next season, leaving Ferdinand to shoulder the attacking burden himself. He then left for Tottenham in the summer of '97.
