10 Embarrassments That Made Newcastle A Laughing Stock

7. Relegation

Perhaps because of the media focus on Newcastle - particularly when the times were good - an image has emerged around the country of Newcastle fans that is further perpetuated by opinionated motor-mouths like Roy Keane. As if hope and the desire to do well are bad things, Newcastle fans are painted as unrealistically arrogant and entitled, and have ridiculous expectations. That is why other team's supporters seem to so gleefully rejoice when something goes wrong at the club. The arrival of Mike Ashley and the inevitable rise in excitement fed into that cliche further, and when the club crashed and burned fans who wouldn't even be considered rivals were falling over themselves to point and laugh. it was like a tyrant had been toppled, only nobody told the subject of the joke that anything was ever actually a problem until banners were unfurled, forums were filled with venom (and not just from Sunderland fans) and shots of Newcastle fans were shown endlessly. Even Noel Gallacher - a man usually due respect - said he liked nothing more than seeing fat Geordies cry.
