10 Embarrassments That Made Newcastle A Laughing Stock

3. The Premier League Crumble

It might seem odd now to talk about Newcastle's infamously close brush with triumph, especially considering the long-held cliche that Kevin Keegan's Entertainers were everyone's second favourite team, but in hindsight, it was a source of embarrassment. Strolling towards an unlikely, but deserved victory, Newcastle imploded in a way that only our club could, throwing away a seemingly unassailable lead to Man United, and writing one of the greatest tragedies in modern football history. Sadly over time, respect for the team's achievements and sympathy for the situation has been replaced with snark and malicious jokes. Unfortunately, any talking heads style Football's Funniest Moments compilation now isn't complete without at least some reference to Kevin Keegan's infamous "I would love it" rant, and players like Tino Asprilla have been recast from geniuses to flamboyant clowns, when that couldn't be further from the truth.
