10 Most Expensive Transfer Flops In Liverpool History

9. Raul Meireles

Roy Hodgson's disastrous brief stint as Liverpool manager during the 2010/11 campaign saw him bring in many woeful signings. In fairness, Raul Meireles was probably one of the better ones, but the £11.5m he joined for proved to be far, far too much. The Portugal international was a regular in the side during the 2010/11 season, but he managed to score just five times in 41 matches. Considering he was seen as a goalscoring midfielder that was a very disappointing return, and the fact that those five goals were scored in the space of six games shows how ineffective he was barring that brief spurt. More often than not he was on the periphery of games, and he lacked the quality that his price tag suggested he had in his armoury. After making two appearances in the 2011/12 campaign, Chelsea rather oddly decided to snap him up on Transfer Deadline Day. Quite what he'd done to justify a move to one of the Premier League title favourites remains a mystery to this day. The 31-year-old was a huge waste of money.
