10 Football Teams That Under-Performed In 2019/20
9. Hull City
As recently as 2014 marked Hull City's first foray into European competitions with a cameo in the UEFA Europa League qualifying rounds. They were unfortunately eliminated on away goals, but their fans were hopeful for the future.
It didn't last.
Following relegation in 2016/17 they finished 18th and 13th in the Championship under Nigel Adkins, who resigned after a disagreement with the board on the club's future. The inexperienced Grant McCann was brought in to steady the helm.
With the club's wage bill being slashed by two-thirds since their relegation and high-profile departures in the form of Harry Maguire, Andy Robertson and Sam Clucas, it is fair to say that Hull never bought adequate replacements.
The final nail in the coffin came when key players Jarrod Bowen and Kamil Grosicki were sold part-way through the 2019/20 season. Of the 41 league goals Hull scored by 3 January 2020, the duo scored 23 of them.
Before the wingers were sold, Hull were sitting in 9th following match-day 26. What a dramatic fall.
Combined with the fact that they conceded 87 goals over the entire season (including an 8-0 loss to Wigan with two games left) it is little wonder as to how they finished rock bottom.
