Manchester City are woefully short of the English players they need to satisfy the Premier League's homegrown quota, and with little indication that they will ever find them from their revamped youth academy, they could find themselves having to make an expensive external acquisition instead.

Dele Alli looks one of the most likely options, the Tottenham midfielder having become one of the division's most prolific attacking midfielders since making the step up from League One MK Dons two years ago.

The England youngster, at 21, is in no rush to leave behind Spurs, where his development has been carefully aided by Mauricio Pochettino, but: money talks. And if City do set their sights on Alli, don't expect Daniel Levy to let him go without a record transfer outlay.
