10 Footballers Who Really Didn't Deserve Winners Medals

8. Roy Carroll

Between the retirement of the unrivalled Schmeichel and the arrival of the fabulous Edwin van der Sar, United had all sorts of problems in goal. Massimo Taibi was embarrassingly bad, while Tim Howard and Mark Bosnich didn't fare much better. Another who failed to impress during his time at Old Trafford was Roy Carroll. The Northern Irishman was often second-choice goalkeeper, and whenever he did play he looked completely out his depth. His famous error from Pedro Mendes' shot from the halfway line against Tottenham in 2005, which despicably went unpunished, summed it all up. Despite his ineptitude, he won the 2003/04 FA Cup with United, but in fairly ridiculous circumstances. With Sir Alex Ferguson's side cruising to a 3-0 win over a hapless Millwall side in the final, he was introduced as an 84th-minute substitute in place of Howard, in order to qualify for a winners medal. It's an understandable thing to do if the player coming on is a club legend or a young starlet, but when it's someone as distinctly average as Carroll, it just makes you a bit bemused.
