With his matinee idol looks and a never-ending array of trendy haircuts, David Beckham was the Brad Pitt of football. The floppy haired youngster always seemed destined to play this role ever since he burst onto the scene for Manchester United back in 1992.

Beckham was one of the "Class of 92", the young guns of Manchester United who formed the nucleus of Sir Alex Ferguson's dominating United squad of the nineties. Beckham's position on the right wing of the team was seemingly untouchable for this era, but his status as a celebrity was always going to be at odds with a pragmatic Ferguson. An infamous dressing room clash in early 2003 saw Ferguson kick a football boot at the head of Beckham, who then fronted up to the United boss.

No player survived the ire of the almighty Ferguson, and it was clear that Beckham was heading for the Old Trafford exit. In the summer of 2003, Beckham departed for Real Madrid to form part of their "Galácticos" team of superstar players. It was a deal that broke the hearts of Manchester United fans everywhere, but they didn't have to wait long before they found a new hero to replace Becks...
