10 Greatest World Cup Underdog Stories
1. Cameroon (1990)
The 1990 World Cup has gone down in history as one of the poorer tournaments, producing a record low number of goals, plenty of red cards, and a lot of dull defensive play. One thing that did stand out from the tournament, however, was Cameroon.
Drawn in Group B alongside Romania, the Soviet Union, and World Champions Argentina, Cameroon were not expected to get far in the tournament, with African nations having poor records at past World Cups. So the world was thrown into shock when Cameroon beat Argentina 1-0 in their first group game. They proved it wasn't a fluke by beating Romania too, before knocking out Colombia in the round of 16.
After that, they were eliminated by the Three Lions in a thrilling 3-2 quarter final classic, but went out with their heads held high. Inspired by Roger Milla, who was 38 at the time but managed to score four goals during the tournament, Cameroon's 1990 run will forever be known as one of the greatest sporting underdog stories of all time.
