10 Huge Boxing Upsets Nobody Expected To See
2. Andy Ruiz Jr. Defeats Anthony Joshua
Few modern day fighters have captured the attention of British fight fans like Anthony Joshua has.
A darling of Team GB at the 2012 Olympics, Joshua looked untouchable in the heavyweight ranks with knockout after knockout delivered in the professional ranks, including an impressive win against the legendary Vladimir Klitschko.
There was little to worry about then for Joshua, it seemed, when he defended his titles against the little known Andy Ruiz Jr. earlier this year.
Despite only losing once going into the fight, few backed Ruiz Jr. to even trouble the bigger and leaner Joshua, while even fewer thought the Mexican-American had a chance of putting Joshua on the deck or outboxing him.
But that's exactly what he did in June 2019, shocking the world and Joshua with a ferocious display of punching power to take home the gold.
Joshua was seemingly never at the races and Ruiz Jr. capitalised on this to maximum effect, despite hitting the canvas himself in the third round of the contest.
Ruiz Jr. responded by almost immediately sending Joshua to the floor. It was a fall which Joshua couldn't recover from, as his unfancied yet efficient opponent ground him down over the next few rounds.
Eventually the punches took their toll, with the referee waving the fight off in the seventh round to give Ruiz Jr. an astonishing TKO victory and put his name immediately up in lights in the boxing world.
