10 Most Humiliating World Cup Defeats

6. Algeria 2-1 West Germany

Algeria took a shock lead here but it didn't last long as Karl-Heinz Rummenigge equalised for West Germany a minute later. The upset looked to have been called off and everything was once more right with the world, until Lakhdar Belloumi scored what would prove to be Algeria's winning goal in the 68th minute. Belloumi said Algeria's shock win provided a "blueprint" for other underdogs to follow in future World Cups but despite the noble gesture everyone's second favourite team in 1982 failed to get past the group stages thanks to one of the competition's biggest ever controversies. West Germany played out an obviously-pre-planned 1-0 win over neighbours Austria days later in a result that sent both nations through and Algeria out. Knowing the result was enough to send both countries through, neither the Germans nor Austria made any attempt to change the outcome of the result, which was perhaps more embarrassing than that Algeria inflicted on West Germany.
