Man City aren't the only club to fall foul of Financial Fair Play regulations...
After winning promotion to the Premier League courtesy of a last-minute goal from Bobby Zamora in the 2014 Play-off Final, it seemed like things were on the up for Queens Park Rangers.
However, behind the scenes, everything wasn't quite so rosy for the West London team. Despite only narrowly securing promotion, the club's wage bill was higher than the majority of Premier League teams and the spending spree didn't end after promotion.
The extortionate fees the club was spending in the second tier of English football did not go unnoticed by the governing bodies, and QPR were eventually levied with a record-breaking £40 million fine which remains the highest in the history of the sport.
And how did the team fare following their free-spending campaign? In a word, poorly. Rangers managed just eight wins in the top flight, finishing bottom of the table, and have yet to return.
