If ever there was a player who wasn't worth the hassle, it was Diouf. In Liverpool's 122-year history, there has not been a more dislikable, unsporting, overrated player to have donned the Red jersey, and he is held in the lowest regard by the majority of football fans worldwide. Diouf actually signed as an extremely promising 21-year-old. He had enjoyed an excellent 2002 World Cup with Senegal, earning rave reviews for his influential displays, and two goals on his home Premier League debut against Southampton immediately won him even more praise. From that point on, however, he was nothing more than a hindrance. His ineffective performances up front saw Diouf shifted to a right-wing role, and he didn't score his next goal until March 2003. He finished the 2002/03 season with just six in all competitions. More alarming than his poor form, however, was his disgusting behaviour. During that season he spat at a Celtic supporter during a UEFA Cup clash at Parkhead, receiving a two-match ban- far too lenient- and fined two weeks wages. In 2003/04 he didn't score one goal in his 33 appearances; an absolutely astonishing statistic. He did receive 13 yellow cards and one red though. Carragher's opinion of Diouf summed it all up: "He has one of the worst strike rates of any forward in Liverpool history. He's the only no. 9 ever to go through a whole season without scoring, in fact he's probably the only no. 9 of any club to do that. He was always the last one to get picked in training." Having joined Bolton on loan in 2004/05, Liverpool finally got rid of their man for good the following summer. To say Diouf was a pain in the neck is the understatement of the century.
