10 Man Utd Players Who Did Nothing For Club (But Excelled For Their Country)

7. Keith Gillespie

Former Manchester United and Newcastle winger Keith Gillespie may have his demons, having made no secret of his bankruptcy - having lost £7 million due to gambling - but in his day, he was a fine winger who could whip in a ball with such ferocity and pinpoint accuracy. A Northern Irish hero, the 39 year old has 86 caps to his name, which places him sixth in the list of appearances for his country. Having made his debut in September 1994 during a 2-1 home defeat by Portugal, Gillespie proved to be a valiant warrior for the minnows for 14 years as they struggled in vain to qualify for major tournaments. However, the Northern Ireland servant didn€™t really do much at Old Trafford. A member of the FA Youth Cup-winning side of 1992, alongside the likes of Ryan Giggs, David Beckham and Paul Scholes, Gillespie made his debut for the club during the 92/93 season, scoring against Bury. However, this FA Cup run-out was to be his sole representation for the Red Devils that season and was farmed out on loan to Wigan Athletic, before returning to be given the sporadic appearance here and there, but was never able to dislodge Andrei Kanchelskis as the club€™s first-choice winger on the right-hand side. In January 1995, Sir Alex Ferguson waived him off as a makeweight in the deal that took Andy Cole from St. James€™ Park to Old Trafford. And it was there, that the lad from a town called Larne€™s career really took off.
