10 Man Utd Players Who Should Fear For Their Future
10. Chris Smalling
Now just why would Manchester United want to get rid of 24 year old centre-back Chris Smalling when they are enduring their worst defensive crisis in living memory? While the English defender may not be shipped out in January, it would take a brave man to bank on Man United boss Louis Van Gaal keeping the former Fulham man in his long-term plans following his inexplicable red card against Manchester City earlier this month. The Dutchman described the defenders reckless behaviour as stupid, and it summed up a personal period of frustration at Old Trafford for the former Maidstone United centre-half. Often deployed out of position as a right-back, Smalling has never made more than 25 league appearances for the club, struggling to compete with the likes of Nemanja Vidic, Rio Ferdinand, Phil Jones and Rafael for game-time. He has made just five league appearances for van Gaal so far this term, and considering how slowly he seems to have progressed over the last five years, one wouldnt be surprised if the club finally lost patience and cashed in on the once-promising £10 million-rated centre-half.
