10 Man Utd Players Who Should Fear For Their Future

10. Chris Smalling

Now just why would Manchester United want to get rid of 24 year old centre-back Chris Smalling when they are enduring their worst defensive crisis in living memory? While the English defender may not be shipped out in January, it would take a brave man to bank on Man United boss Louis Van Gaal keeping the former Fulham man in his long-term plans following his inexplicable red card against Manchester City earlier this month. The Dutchman described the defender€™s reckless behaviour as €˜stupid€™, and it summed up a personal period of frustration at Old Trafford for the former Maidstone United centre-half. Often deployed out of position as a right-back, Smalling has never made more than 25 league appearances for the club, struggling to compete with the likes of Nemanja Vidic, Rio Ferdinand, Phil Jones and Rafael for game-time. He has made just five league appearances for van Gaal so far this term, and considering how slowly he seems to have progressed over the last five years, one wouldn€™t be surprised if the club finally lost patience and cashed in on the once-promising £10 million-rated centre-half.
