6. Neil Mellor vs Arsenal; November 2004
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NdgKLfAYrZI It either speaks volumes about the extent of Liverpool's injury crisis ten years ago, or how threadbare their squad was, that 21 year old Neil Mellor was given 16 run-outs. The fact that they were having to call on the likes of this youth product with not a top-flight goal to his name to bail them out of trouble possibly shows how big an achievement winning the Champions League was that season. Anyway, Mellor played a key role before the arrival of Fernando Morientes in January, scoring against Olympiakos before setting up Steven Gerrard for that crucial piledriver against the Greeks, but his finest moment was reserved for a cold and windy winter's evening at Anfield when Arsenal came to town. With Xabi Alonso having given Liverpool the lead with his first goal for the club, drilling home a fine shot from the edge of the area, Patrick Vieira lifted home an equaliser just before the hour mark. With Arsenal's confidence having been knocked by their recent defeat at Old Trafford - their first league loss in 49 games - Anfield could smell blood. Pushing forward at every opportunity, time was running out to snatch the winner, when a new hero unearthed himself in the form of the 21 year old, rifling past Jens Lehmann from 25 yards in stoppage time. If only he approached the rest of his career with the same conviction with which he met that dropping ball.
