10 Memorable Man United Goals Scored By Ordinary Players

9. David Bellion vs Arsenal, December 2004

A complete waste of time who caused an unnecessary amount of friction between Sunderland and Manchester United, the signing of David Bellion was certainly not one of Sir Alex Ferguson's finest moments. Frozen out of the squad and restricted to a bit-part role at Old Trafford, the French striker had been quickly found out as not being up to scratch. However, there was one rare moment in a three year spell of anonymity that will have lived in the memory of Manchester United supporters for a while. The Capital One Cup - or Carling, Worthington, League etc - has never been highly valued or regarded as a prestigious trophy, which is probably why Bellion was even afforded the game-time to notch after 19 seconds against Arsenal. With both sides sending out second strings, it certainly wasn't a vintage encounter between the sides, but tensions between the two clubs were at an all-time high at the time following Manchester United's win over the Gunners the previous month. Having halted their 49 match unbeaten run in controversial fashion, with Arsenal supporters lambasting Wayne Rooney's perceived 'dive' for the penalty, the clash between the pair was always going to provide fireworks. Bellion's weak shot squirmed underneath the body of Manuel Almunia after just 19 seconds, which is what ultimately decided the game, as Man United sailed into the semi-finals.
