10 Memorable Man United Goals Scored By Ordinary Players

3. Michael Owen vs Man City, September 2009

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=toYDJdp26rs Let's just iron this one out straight away - Michael Owen was one of the most lethal strikers in English football in his heyday. But by the time he got to Old Trafford, he was a washed up shell of a man, having produced some pitifully apathetic displays for Newcastle United during their futile relegation scrap. It's no wonder he had to send out a brochure to entice potential employers. A surprise move it may have been when Manchester United swooped for him in 2009, especially given his Anfield connections, he made little impact at the club, but there will be at least one moment that will have him remembered fondly by some sections of the Man United support. It was one of the most entertaining Manchester derbies in recent years, as Mark Hughes' newly assembled squad - including former United hero Carlos Tevez - arrived at Old Trafford in September 2009. Sir Alex Ferguson was keen to win this derby more than most, if only to silence the 'noisy neighbours'. The atmosphere was already electric when Wayne Rooney gave the Red Devils the lead after two minutes, before Gareth Barry levelled matters 15 minutes later. Darren Fletcher put the home side back in front after half-time, before the pendulum once again swung the other way, with Craig Bellamy equalising three minutes later. The Scottish midfielder looked to have hit the winner with ten minutes remaining, before the Welshman grabbed his second equaliser in injury-time. However, seven minutes of injury-time had been added on by then, and Michael Owen was on the pitch. Manchester City, beware. With City desperately holding out for the 3-3 draw, and the fervent home atmosphere almost willing the ball into the back of the net, Ryan Giggs displayed the vision of a hawk to pick out the former England international on the inside of the box. Rolling back the years, he showed the composure of Owen of Anfield's past, in stabbing past the onrushing Joe Hart. Sprinting away with arms aloft, Old Trafford erupted in celebrating something they never thought they would - a Michael Owen goal.
