By 2011, Glasgow Rangers were operating on a shoe-string transfer budget, one that meant manager Walter Smith could only afford one big money signing. Nikica Jelavic was signed for around £4 million from Rapid Vienna in the Summer of 2010, but that wasn't the move that made the Ibrox transfer kitty start to pour out, it had completely poured out on the Croatian hitman! Instead of signing more players like Jelavic, Smith had to make do and mend with a series of loans, such as Vladimir Weiss and El Hadji Diouf. Meanwhile, across the city, Celtic's transfer policy seemed to be spending all the money they had on unproven young players. The sheer number of players brought in by the club over the previous few years had been confusing, because there was rarely any real sustained challenge over a re-emerging Rangers, who dominated from season 2008-2009 onwards. The League Cup Final in February, 2011 was supposed to be the moment Celtic got it all together, however, but those stories coming out of the media didn't take into account the sheer will to win that Walter Smith's Rangers had. There was a steely determination about the Teddy Bears, one evident as Rangers triumphed 2-1 after extra time, a cool finish from Jelavic sealing the trophy. Once again, Celtic had been put to the sword.
