For extremely promising careers that didn't quite get going due to injury, first read Harry Kewell. Then read Lucas Radebe.

A South African footballer who moved from midfield to central defence as his career progressed, Radebe wasn't called 'The Chief' for nothing. Another Leeds star, he arrived under the radar as a make-weight in a deal to bring Philemon Masinga to the club in 1994. Unknown and unheralded, his performances quickly saw him eclipse his national team star by some distance.

Soon he was named captain, and along with Kewell helped Leeds to three consecutive top 4 finishes. Ultimately Inter Milan offered £25m for his services that Leeds turned down. From then on it was a familiar - and somewhat inevitable - story. He was out for two seasons with knee and ankle injuries and was rarely seen again, which was a shame given that he was one of the league's finest defenders for a time.
